One afternoon, a mysterious package appeared on our front door. It was leaning against the door when I arrived home. Draped in black and standing stylishly in the freezing cold, though looking a bit out of place, this package was addressed to me.

It turned out to be the first award of my life. I've never received medals, certificates, or any other recognitions for anything. As a child, I dabbled in track and field, but I was so bad at it that I was almost always dead last. Once, I placed third in some random competition, but only because there were just three participants.

At first, I thought in a very Finnish way (and true to my roots in Kainuu): I won’t tell anyone about this. I’ll just bury the award in some drawer and leave it at that. After all, we’re not supposed to brag about our achievements. Even athletes on TV tend to humbly downplay their accomplishments and shift the focus to praising their support teams.

Well, I’ll praise my support team too, because this award isn’t just for me. It’s for all of you—an astonishingly large number of people—who have found your way to the other side of the screen to follow along with whatever I happen to be up to in this tiny village of twenty-five people on the edge of the wilderness.

So, instead of hiding the award in a drawer, I’m going to bring it out and share it with all of you. Because it belongs to you too. I wouldn’t be receiving any awards if it weren’t for all of you out there, my support team and my strength.
