Update from the Nordic summer - VIDEO
Summer is a strange time, at least for me. It feels like I'm always in a hurry to go somewhere, even though, in reality, that's not the case. Summer just moves at such a fast pace that it feels like I’m in a rush, too.
The flowers bloom for a week and then hand over to the next ones. The wildflowers bloomed a while ago – I even managed to bring a few bouquets inside. Now it's the turn of fireweed and meadowsweet. I’d love to collect both and make juice or syrup. After them, only tansy and resilient yarrow remain before the rowan trees start showing their red berries and the first signs of autumn appear in the trees. Summer is over so quickly.
During this short period, we try to get everything done at once: preparing firewood for next winter (and a bit for the one after that), expanding and tending to the garden, seeing relatives and friends (since in the summer everyone is on the move and visiting), and even helping with village tasks, from fishing to haymaking.
That’s why making videos and writing have fallen to the bottom of the list, and there’s been a summer silence here. I’m also terrible at sitting myself down for a day or even half a day at the computer when I could be outside barefoot, running through the fields, and gathering flowers.
But here’s an update in video form about our summer. We’re eagerly waiting for the forest and bog berries to ripen. It looks like there will be plenty of blueberries, and a decent amount of cloudberries, too. Around the house, wild raspberries are true to their name, growing so wildly they’re almost smothering everything else. But it looks like they’ll produce a good amount of fruit as well. This winter, we’ll once again enjoy colorful morning porridge, as long as we keep working hard now to gather the vitamins.
Wishing you a pleasant – and unhurried – summer.
