Cold records in the North of Finland- VIDEO
We've now reached those record-breaking cold temperatures. If I remember correctly, there was a time when I longed for cold air and what you might call 'real' winter temperatures. I might want to take back some of my words, if you'll allow it.
We're in a pretty good situation, though. While the neighbor’s thermometer, just 100 meters away, shows -32°C, ours shows nearly 10 degrees less since we live on the hilltop. It's called an inversion, apparently. Warm air rises, so in this case, it's fortunate to live on higher ground. But if there's even the slightest breeze, we’re the losers, as the combination of cold and wind chills our cheeks red in seconds.
"Well, despite everything, we’ve managed relatively well. I think I even said the other day that I thought we’d already experienced colder temperatures and was surprised at how well we’ve handled it. Although, it seems I should probably be more careful with my words in the future so I don’t have to take them back.
I just mean that even though the cabin was cold, and the bedroom even colder, we still managed quite well. It was barely 15°C inside at best, despite all three fireplaces being lit and carrying in so much wood that our shoulders were sore.
Besides the cold, there are always issues with the cars. Well, my car at least. The battery dies in no time (yes, we’ve replaced batteries worth half a grand and checked this and that), as soon as the temperature drops. Luckily, it’s not a big deal to call a tow truck to give it a jump start right in the yard, and we’re off again. The key is to remember to handle it well in advance, not right when you need to head to town. We learn from these things.
Despite everything, the cold creates unbelievably beautiful landscapes. From up here on the hill, we have a front-row seat to admire them, even from inside the cabin if you don’t dare stick your nose outside. The sky reflects the colors of the polar night—blues and pinks—almost every morning and again in the early afternoon.
The sun barely skims above the treetops, and you can only catch a glimpse of it if you’re standing at the highest point of a hill. But those colors in the sky are something truly magnificent. I doubt I’ll ever grow tired of them.
I made a video about our life in the midst of the cold. And during that, I also went on a little adventure to my favorite spot. You already know what it is, but if you can’t quite recall, I’ll show and tell in the video.
Grab a warm blanket and settle in to watch the chilly ride. I’m so happy you’re here <3
