Toward a More Self-Sufficient Life - VIDEO
A new video about our garden, its plantings, and what a northern summer really looks like is now live.
Self-sufficiency is often on my mind. I think about how this village has lived independently for nearly a century, isolated from others, yet has managed to get by until tomorrow. Why does it feel like such an impossible thought today?
Our village is still considered a wilderness village by the neighboring villages and especially by the church village. The road was built only a hundred years after our cabin was completed. Before that, people traveled easily by horse, boat, and skis. The oldest neighbors still remember that time and happily share stories about it. Food was sourced from their own fields, lakes, and forests, both for themselves and for the animals in the barn. This included provisions for winter. A fascinating idea.
I understand, of course, that it’s impossible to compare then and now. In today’s context, full self-sufficiency in the north seems nearly impossible.
But it’s always worth striving for.
In the video, I show what we’ve accomplished in our first spring. It’s not much yet, but everything in its time. That’s what the old neighbor says too.
Enjoy wonderful moments with the northern summer video!
