Christmas time
The little stars twinkle,
taking away our worries.
The northern lights ripple,
their light shining for us.
The stars watch the earth,
their glow lighting up the night,
bringing us new joy,
and the Christmas spirit to all.Z. Topelius
Christmas is almost here. This year, it feels incomplete, strange, and peculiar with all the restrictions, warnings, masks, and sanitizers. But it’s still Christmas.
I’m heading south for the first time since moving here six months ago. The thought of a dark Christmas, spoiled by streetlights, and the sad dampness doesn’t appeal to me, but it’s been a long time since I’ve seen family and friends. Even though the essence of Christmas—being together and the sense of community—is restricted this year, it will still be wonderful to see loved ones and catch up in ways other than a glitchy WhatsApp call.
I’ll take a break for Christmas and return to writing around the new year. By then, I’ll be back in the north, and maybe I’ll have even visited the fells to greet the sun after kaamos.
Let’s take this time to rest and pause since there aren’t many other options. Wishing you all a peaceful Christmas season.💫
